Description

Students will design an experiment to answer a question about light on a new planet. Students will present their experiment idea to the class. Students will answer a question about light on the new planet by completing one of the student-designed experiment

1. Introduction

Today you will learn how to program the light sensor on the GoPiGo, gather data about light levels in the classroom, and design an experiment to answer a question about light levels on the planet.

Student Handout

2. Attach Brightness Sensor

Plug the light sensor into either one of the I2C ports on the GoPiGo rover.

Connect to your GoPiGo and click on Code in Bloxter.

3. Using the Brightness Sensor

The light sensor will give a reading using percentages from 0 (completely dark) to 100 (maximum brightnesss). The live sensor reading is shown on the sensor control panel.

4. Gather Baseline Data

Gather baseline data for the light sensor.

          • Determine five different locations or conditions within your classroom where there are different levels of light. Write the name of each location/condition in the chart on the student handout.
          • Move your GoPiGo to the first location/condition.

          • Take three readings of the light level and record each on the chart below.
          • Calculate the mean average for that location.
          • Repeat that process for the other three locations/conditions.

5. Design an Experiment to Investigate Light

Your task is to develop and conduct an experiment to answer a question regarding light on Planet-3141 that can be answered by gathering data from the light sensor on your rover. Describe your experiment on the student handout before beginning to program.

Use what you have learned from the previous lessons about gathering data with your GoPiGo rover to design the experiment and program your rover.

6. Summarize Your Findings

Summarize your findings of the planet to include all lessons (visual survey, living conditions, and light levels). Do you believe that the planet is habitable? Why or why not? What challenges may be encountered if the planet is colonized?

Create a presentation to share your findings of the planet with the class.
